Acording to reports from NFL Network Insiders Ian Rapoport and Tom Pelissero, running back Aaron Jones is poised to join the Minnesota Vikings on a one-year contract worth $7 million. This move comes just a day after Jones was released by the Green Bay Packers.
The decision to release Jones by the Packers came after they reached an agreement with Josh Jacobs. Jones, who was set to have a cap hit of $17.575 million for Green Bay, was asked to take a pay cut by the team's management, a request he declined. Consequently, the Packers opted to part ways with the 29-year-old running back.
Facing his former team, the Packers, twice in the upcoming 2024 season, Jones' move to the Vikings adds a new dynamic to the NFC North rivalry.
Jones has been a formidable presence in the NFL, particularly as a versatile running back capable of making an impact both on the ground and as a pass catcher. Despite experiencing hamstring issues in 2023, Jones has consistently delivered impressive performances, amassing over 1,100 scrimmage yards and seven scrimmage touchdowns in four consecutive seasons from 2019 to 2022.
With concerns over injury as he enters his thirties, Jones' signing underscores the Vikings' confidence in his ability to energize their offense. Joining a roster that includes Ty Chandler, Kene Nwangwu, Myles Gaskin, and DeWayne McBride in the running back room, Jones is expected to immediately assume a leading role in the Vikings' offensive schemes under the guidance of Kevin O'Connell.
His dual-threat capabilities make him an attractive addition to the Vikings' lineup, adding depth and versatility to their offensive arsenal.
In joining the Vikings, Jones follows in the footsteps of other former Packers who have made the transition to Minnesota, including notable names like Brett Favre, Greg Jennings, and Za'Darius Smith.
